Hi! We're heading off on a 40-day road trip across the great USA, starting Friday, April 9, 2010. Here, we hope to capture all the times - good, bad and ugly - to share with friends and family and to have as a record of what we hope to be an amazing adventure.

We plan to update every day or two and would love to hear from you - we'll miss you, you know.

Also, feel free to play Where In North America Are The LaurAndy's? on Facebook to win awesome prizes (no cash, just prizes...and probably pretty chintzy ones, too...we're unemployed at the moment.)

See you along the road!

Day 4...Charleston, SC

Today we spent the day in beautiful downtown Charleston.  We woke up early to take advantage of luxurious La Quinta free breakfast and headed off to see what Charleston had to offer - we have been hearing rave reviews from so many people.  We stopped at the visitor's center and learned that Charleston is definitely a walking city (unless it's mid-July and 105 degrees...luckily we are here in early April), so we parked our trusty Rav 4 (Raquel) and went down to the Fort Sumter Museum to purchase tickets for the noon tour.  We spent the rest of the morning checking out the shops on Market Street, which includes an interesting bunch of open air markets with crafty-type things and other general crap that you somehow enjoy browsing, but won't actually purchase.  We also got some pretty good iced coffee.

Around 11:30, we wound up back at Fort Sumter's visitor's center to take a look through the museum and boarded our ferry shortly before noon.  It was great to be out on the water, even if it was a huge ferry.  We learned right off the bat that today, April 12, is the 149th anniversary of the battle at Fort Sumter - pretty cool.  The fort has a really fascinating story behind it and a friendly local park ranger gave us the scoop once we got to the island.  After an hour of looking around, it was back on the ferry.  By then we were starving, so once we docked, we had the lunch of champions - ice cream.

We ate our ice cream on the way to the Edmundson-Alston House - an historic home with a little tour.  There are a ton of homes like this, so we basically settled on this one particular house, which was in a beautiful area down by the water.

For dinner, we planned to hit up what is apparently the most popular seafood place in Charleston - Hyman's - so, we went kind of early to beat the crowd.  Somehow, we managed to have our second helping of hush puppies and we also got to try boiled peanuts (not a fan.)  Getting up so early means getting to bed early because we're old...so, here we are at 9:34 planning our day tomorrow.
